Things to do on a rainy day in the Lake District

The Lake District may be famous for its beautiful countryside, lakes and scenery, but it is also well known for its rainfall. Worry not. If you are planning to visit the Lake District, you can feel safe in the knowledge that there are plenty of things to see and do, even if the weather takes a turn for the worse. Below are some of the best ´rainy day´ attractions to enjoy in the Lake District:

1. The Lake District Aquarium at Maryport

The new-look Lake District Coast Aquarium at Maryport houses a shark exhibition and film, and has also opened the Wild Solway Centre. Other exhibits include fish and invertebrates in 50 displays and fish feeding demonstrations.

2. Greenlands Farm Village near Carnforth

Greenlands Farm Village is situated at Carnforth on the Lancashire/Cumbria border, and first opened its doors in April, 2009. The village boasts shops, activities, cafés and an enormous indoor play area, which is ideal for rainy days. You can also buy local produce, crafts, wine and plants from the village, plus take a tour around the pottery. Animals include Shetland ponies and miniature sheep.

3. Moresby Hall at Whitehaven

Moresby Hall at Whitehaven is a Grade 1 listed building which has recently launched cooker courses. Each course will teach you to make a starter, main course and dessert plus a vegetable dish and canapés.

4. The World of Beatrix Potter and the Peter Rabbit Garden at Bowness

You can leap into the scene of one of Peter Rabbit´s stories at the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness, without getting too wet. If the rain starts to come down, shelter in the greenhouse and explore the gardens of gooseberry bushes and fruit trees later on. Much of the attraction is indoors, so you can stay dry and enjoy the fun.

5.  High Head Sculpture Valley near Carlisle

High Head Sculpture Valley near Carlisle is an incredible exhibition of life-size wood, stone, bronze and iron sculptures, situated in a wooded valley. If the rain starts to fall you can explore the art gallery with temporary exhibitions, plus a tearoom, a farm shop and a spa.

6. Woodsmoke Wilderness Courses at Far Sawray near Hawkshead

Woodsmoke runs woodland survival courses on a private estate between Lake Windermere and Esthwaite Water, where you can learn to make shelters (that will get you out of the rain), track wildlife and make fires. These adult only courses are great for the more adventurous visitors to the Lake District who want to explore the great outdoors. Courses normally last two days.

7.  Eat drink and be merry in the Lake District

There is no better place in England to eat, drink and be merry than the Lake District – particularly on a rainy day. Try the Good Taste Café Cookery School at Keswick, where the deli offers plenty of delicious local produce plus a new studio dining room where diners can see the chefs preparing dinner. This is a ´bring your own booze´ restaurant as it does not have a licence, and you can also book into the cookery school if you want to learn how to cook the dishes on the menu. Another great place to try is the Punchbowl at Crosthwaite, which clinched the Michelin Guide Pub of the Year, 2009. This impressive hostelry offers impressive wine lists, striking interiors plus a seasonal menu, and open fires. If you want to get out of the rain and enjoy some great food at a reasonable price, try Rogan and Company in Cartmel, which belongs to Michelin starred chef, Simon Rogan. This casual bar and restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy delicious local food.

Whatever you are looking for in the Lake District you are likely to find it. From superb accommodation in boutique hotels in Windermere and Bowness, to campsites and guesthouses in Grasmere, Michelin starred restaurants to gastropubs in Cartmel and Keswick, all surrounded by the most stunning countryside, you will be spoilt for choice in the Lake District. Make the most of your stay and check out the weekend deals in the Lake District, late hotel deals and holiday cottage accommodation. Wedding packages are also available and you will find an enormous range of things to see and do in Cumbria during  your stay.
