Events in the Lake District

The Lake District hosts some of the best events in England throughout the year. Such prestigious events as the Mountain Film Festival are held annually in Kendal, which is an international festival with an enormous programme of films, lectures and entertainment. For more information about this festival, check out: www.mountainfest.co.uk.

Another firm favourite with visitors to the Lake District is the William Wordsworth Book Festival, which is held every year in January, in Grasmere. Authors, artists, collectors and fans of William Wordsworth also flock to the area for the Wordsworth Summer Conference in June and the Wordsworth Winter School. For more information, see www.wordsworthconferences.org.uk.

Coniston Power Boat Records Week is the only event in the Powerboat Racing Calendar which brings together all classes of boat. Entry is open to all vessels, from tiny hydroplanes, through to powerful in shore circuit racers and large offshore boats. This event is the finale to the racing season. Competitors and officials from all over the country gather annually for what has been a popular event since 1970.Most events are run by the National Trust, the National Park Authority and the Wildlife Trust, plus other groups and individuals.

The Lake District National Park Authority

The Park Authority arranges special interest events, and also organises guided walks and more challenging hill walks, which are led by a local expert. Talks and slideshows are also on the agenda, and many events are designed especially with children and families in mind. Maps of the Lake District can be found in a document library, and for more information, check out www.lake-district.gov.uk.
