Who is Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, beauty and raw sexuality. According to Greek poet, Hesiod, she arose from the sea, and because of her beauty, other gods feared that jealousy would interrupt the peace among them and lead to war.  Zeus married Aphrodite to Hephaestus, who was not seen as a threat. Aphrodite then became Adonis´s lover and was known as Kypris (Lady of Cyprus) after Cyprus, which claimed her birth. The Roman equivalent of Aphrodite is the Greek goddess, Venus, and doves, swans and sparrow follow her. The Greeks identified the Ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor, with Aphrodite.

About Lake Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere

Windermere & Bowness-on-Windermere can are both roughly at the midpoint on the east side of Lake Windermere, which is the longest lake in England (10.5 miles/17km). Strangely, Windermere is situated about 1 mile/1.5km away from the lake of the same name, while Bowness-on-Windermere is the main tourist centre on the lake.

It may seem odd that Windermere, rather than Bowness at the water s edge, takes its name from the lake, but the reason behind this was to provide the railway station with a more appealing name. Until the opening of the line in 1847, when the Lake District was famous for its lead, copper, zinc and coal mining, Windermere was known as Birthwaite, and was the furthest point the railway was taken in the Lake District. With the introduction of the railway, the region developed quickly around the station and, Windermere hotels, boarding houses, B&Bs eventually spread down the hill to merge with Bowness.

Organic food at the Aphrodites themed boutique hotel

The reasons the Aphrodites Hotel has become organic include:

•    Organic food is healthier, with more flavour and does not contain additives,  pesticides or herbicides, which is good for animals and wildlife

•    Organic food is GM free.

High levels of essential minerals and vitamins which supplement our diet are found naturally in organic produce, particularly in organic milk which contains high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins A and E. Organic food generally has more flavour, as it is grown slower with lower amounts of water content, which creates natural flavour. All organic foods are produced to a high standard locally, and farms producing organic food are inspected at least once a year, which is European law. Organic farming is also a key element in supporting wildlife and causes lower pollution from chemicals and releases less dioxide into the environment. Organic farming also has very high standards to protect livestock.

The Aphrodites themed boutique hotel, Bowness-on-Windermere buys food from local organic producers. Fresh fruit and vegetables are bought daily from Howbarrow Organic Farm nearby, and we buy locally to support the Cumbria farmers, which in turn helps to sustain the local community. Seasonal foods are used where possible so that there is a reduction in energy consumed in their delivery, and we adhere to the ethics of buying fair trade food where possible. All the meat, fish, dairy, vegetables, fruit, bread and whole foods are organic and are produced locally.
