The 10 most scenic B&Bs in the Lake District

If you want to make the most of the stunning scenery of the Lake District, and enjoy incredible views over lakes and open countryside, check into one of the following B&Bs:

1. WASTWATER

Rainor´s Farm is well positioned for guests to enjoy the award-winning views across Wastwater in Wasdale. To win the title of Britain´s favourite view in a televised contest, the Lake District shrugged off competition from Northumberland, the Gower Peninsula and the Mountains of Mourne in County Down. The winning view was of Wastwater, a narrow lake that stretches three miles along the floor of the Wasdale Valley and is overshadowed by mountains, including Red Pie, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike. Rainor´s Farm has three guest rooms and a yurt (canvas shelter) which sleeps up to 5 people in luxurious Bohemian surroundings. Telephone: 019467 25934 or www.rainorsfarm.co.uk.

2.  CONISTON

For unbeatable views of Coniston, stay at Yew Tree Farm. Several scenes from the 2006 film, Miss Potter, about the life and times of Beatrix Potter were shot here. The working 500-acre farm is within walking distance of the Tarns Hows beauty spot, and Yew Tree is now a stylish B&B which has been completely refurbished. Two of the three double bedrooms have four poster beds and breakfast includes plenty of locally sourced produce. Yew Tree is one of the most photographed farms in the Lake District, due to its stunning backdrop of the Coniston Fell Range. You can also pick up a day ticket for fly-fishing in the neighbouring Yew Tree Tarn. Telephone: 015394 41433 or www.yewtree-farm.com

3. TROUTBECK

Troutbeck is one of the Lake District´s most peaceful and spectacular valleys, and is situated just three miles from Lake Windermere. Highfold B&B is popular with walkers and cyclists and offers superb views of the High Street Mountains from all five bedrooms. The Troutbeck Valley and Applethwaite are situated to the east and the peaks of Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick lie to the north east. To the north is Park Fell, Kirkstone Pass and the route of a Roman Road. Telephone: 015394 32200 or www.highfoldbedandbreakfast.co.uk.

4. MUNGRISDALE

The four-star Near Howe Guest House and self catering cottages enjoy an elevated position near the village of Mungrisdale. Visitors can enjoy superb views over local landscapes. Near Howe sits in 380 acres of open farmland, just 8 miles from Keswick and 7 miles from Ullswater. With five bedrooms, including two family rooms, all named after local villages, the Howe Guest House welcomes visitors from all over England. Five attractive cottages sleep between 4 and 7 guests, and the rates are very reasonable. Telephone; 017687 or enquiries@nearhowe.co.uk

5. KESWICK

One of the most visited regions of the Lake District, Keswick attracts thousands of visitors a year. Ellas Crag is situated at the foot of Causey Pike, in the Newlands Valley, and boasts superb views over the valley, towards Catbells and Skiddaw. Situated just 10 minutes away from Keswick town centre, this stylish guesthouse is also located close to the road which overlooks Buttermere, Crummock Water and Borrowdale. Four elegant guest rooms have TVs and en suite bathrooms, and the rates represent excellent value for money.

6.  HAWKSHEAD

Stunning views of Hawkshead and the Vale of Esthwaite can be enjoyed by guests at the superior room 15 at Yewfield Vegetarian B&B. Located on Hawkshead Hill, the tower suite offers views to Lake Windermere, and the luxury suite overlooks the tarn and yards. The prices drop if guests are staying multiple nights, and you may even be lucky enough to be staying during a classical concert. Yewfield has a Steinway Grand Piano and musicians from around the world have played here. If you prefer self-catering, there are three cottages in the grounds which sleep between four and six people.

7.  BOWNESS ON WINDERMERE

Offering one of the most beautiful views in the Lake District, Fair Rigg Guesthouse enjoys a superb spot at Ferry View, Bowness-on-Windermere. Looking across to the Fairfield Horseshoe and on to distant fells which rise above Ambleside at the head of Lake Windermere, this is a superb location for lovers of the countryside.  The guesthouse has six comfortable bedrooms and very good rates include breakfast. Telephone: 015394 43941 or stay@fairrigg.co.uk.

8.  CROSTHWAITE

Crosthwaite House is situated on the outskirts of Kendal, just a short walk from the Michelin Pub of the Year, 2009, The Punchbowl. The Lyth and Winster valleys are famous for damson orchards, from which gin and jam are made, stunning landscapes and plenty of things to see and do. Three rooms at the front of Crosthwaite House offer beautiful views over the valley and rooms on the opposite side of the house overlook a charming church.
