1.A World in Miniature Museum
, Houghton Hall Garden Centre, Houghton, Carlisle, Cumbria, CA6 4JB. Tel: 01228 400388. This is a fascinating museum which contains three collections of the world´s top miniatures. Remarkable copies of antique furniture sit in tiny room settings, and everyday items in miniature are also displayed. An incredible display of clever workmanship and amazing detail.

2.Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre
, Brockhole, Windermere, Cumbria, LA23 1LJ. Tel: 0845 272 0004. This visitor centre offers interactive exhibitions, Mawson Gardens, and adventure playground, a shop and information centre. Lakeshore access is also available directly from the gardens.

3.The Brewery Arts Centre

This is a centre for world class theatre, music, art and events, and it boasts a 450 capacity music venue, three cinemas, two visual arts galleries, a drama studio and an excellent café-bar serving a range of home-made dishes, including cakes, snacks and full meals.

4.Cars of the Stars Motor Museum
, Standish Street, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 5LS. Tel: 017687 73757. This is a fantastic museum, which features a wide range of vehicles from TV and film, including Batmobiles, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, James Bond movies and many more.

5.Cumberland Pencil Museum
, Southey Works, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 5NG. Tel: 017687 73626. Visitors to this exciting attraction can enter through a replica of the Seathwaite mine, journey through the history of pencil-making, and marvel at the world´s longest pencil. There are also quiz trails for the kids and an excellent café selling home cooked food.

6.Ducky´s Park Farm, Airfrield Farm
, Flookburgh, Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, LA11 7LS. Tel: 015395 59293. This is a children´s open farm with visitors centre, and is the ideal attraction for kids of all ages.

7.Greenlands Farm Village
, Tewitfield, Carnforth, Lancashire, LA6 1JH. Tel: 01524 784184. This farm development includes a farm shop, a café with outdoor seating selling local produce, an open farm visitor attraction, a garden centre, a wine shop and pottery display.

8.Lakeland Motor Museum
, Old Blue Mill, Backbarrow, Newby Bridge, Cumbria, LA12 8TA. Tel: 015395 58509. This museum is home to an incredible display of vehicles, with over 30,000 exhibits, including the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition. There is also a motorist´s gift shop and a Riverside Café.

9.The Lakes Aquarium
, Lakeside, Newby Bridge, Ulverston, Cumbria, LA12 8AS. Tel: 015395 30153. This fantastic award-winning aquarium offers a wide range of features, plus several species of freshwater fish and exhibitions to explain the importance of conservation in the Lake District.

10.Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway
, Haverthwaite Station, Haverthwaite, Ulverston, Cumbria, LA12 8AL. Tel: 015395 31594. Steam trains run a seasonal daily service from Haverthwaite to Lakeside via the Leven Valley. A licensed restaurant is also available, plus a tour of the engine sheds, a shop and a picnic area.

11.Mirehouse Historic House and Gardens
, Underskiddaw, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 4QE. Tel: 017687 72287. This is a family-run  historic house with strong literary connections. Live piano music plays throughout, and a children´s quiz is held in the house. Kids can also make the most of woodland playgrounds, a heather maze, and a poetry walk in the grounds. A tearoom specialises in Cumbrian food.


12.Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass
, Cumbria, CA18 1RQ. Tel: 01229 717614. Apparently haunted, Muncaster Castle has been home to the Pennington family for 800 years. Boasting a 70-acre garden, and famous for a stunning display of rhododendrons and azaleas, and a stunning location, the castle offers plenty of children´s activities, plus a world owl centre with over 40 species of owl.


13.Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry
, Abbot Hall, Kendal, Cumbria, LA9 5AL. Tel: 01539 722464. This award-winning museum transports you back through time and explains how the local residents of the Lake District lived and worked many years ago. A fascinating insight into the early years of the Lake District.

14.Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway
, Ravenglass, Cumbria, CA18 1SW. Tel: 01229 717171. Enjoy a day out on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, and be transported on Heritage steam engines and cosy covered carriages from the village of Ravenglass to the foot of some of England´s highest mountains.

15.RSPB Leighton Moss Nature Reserve

20.Trout Fishing at Hawkshead
, The Boathouse, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 0QF. Tel: 015394 36541. Esthwaite Water is the largest-stocked lake in the North West of England, and offers renowned top fishing action, amidst incredible scenery. Tuition is available and there is also a tackle shop onsite.
