Hardknott Roman Fort near Eskdale
Hardknott Roman Fort is situated near Eskdale, and is a superb example of the remains of Roman occupation in the area. The Romans occupied the Lake District for over 350 years, and the ruins date back to around AD125. The fort was constructed to control the road from Ravenglass to Ambleside and the remains stretch over an area of nearly 3 acres.
