Beatrix Potter had a sex life

The thought that Beatrix Potter might actually have enjoyed a sex life would doubtless make Peter Rabbit blush, and it would surely come as a shock to Jemima Puddle Duck´s many admirers.

It took the best part of a century for the film Miss Potter to explore the idea of a more intimate side to Beatrix Potter´s life, and the story of how she defies her austere parents to get secretly engaged to the first true love of her life is gripping.

Chris Noonan´s film, Miss Potter painted a touching picture of a young woman at odds with her stifling parents, and the casting was perfect. Renée Zellweger was a delightful frump as the lonely Beatrix, whose childhood was spent trying to escape the shackles of her stiff, middle-class upbringing. Although Beatrix enjoyed the privileges that came with wealthy parents, her Kensington mansion was stuffed to the brim with maids and sinister aunts. Her Victorian parents indulged her love of art and nature, without taking her creative talents seriously.  Educating a daughter was simply not the ´done thing´ in Edwardian times.

Zellweger took the part perfectly, and heaven was her dark attic, where she pores over a desk and talks to Jemima Puddle Duck. Beatrix has a healthy contempt for formality, and even when Frederick Warne and Co agrees to publish the Tale of Peter Rabbit, she is still regarded as a useful tax loss. Norman Warne then fell head over heels in love with Beatrix and their painfully shy courtship was uncomfortable to watch.

As with most Edwardian tales, the film has a slight ´Poppins´ feel to it, and although everything is slightly exaggerated, the overall effect is enlightening. McGregor´s handsome portrayal of the publisher slowly and unsuccessfully attempts to win round the parents of Beatrix, and it is only when her success as an author continues that she can enjoy the freedom she has always sought.

Miss Potter is a rare film that is brought to life with the wonderful portrayal of the author by Renée Zellweger.
