Top 10 Autumn and Winter events in the Lake District
Most visitors enjoy the splendour of the Lake District during the spring and summer, but if you choose to visit in Autumn or winter, there are still plenty of things to see and do. Our top ten annual events include:
1.The British Gas Great North Swim

Windermere - September 4th-5th. This is a great event to watch, as the swimmers compete along a 1 mile open water course. Entries are now close for 2010, but it is still worth going down to the shoreline and cheering on the competitors. www.greatnorthswim.org
2.The Egremont Crab Fair - September 18th, 2010. Offering fun for all the family, the Egremont Crab Fair is legendary. With fun stalls, sideshows, rides, a beer tent, and of course, plenty of crabs, check out:www.egremontcrabfair.org.uk for more information.
3.The Ambleside Outdoor Festival - September 16th-19th. Cyclists are invited to meet the challenge of this 1 in 4 climb up to 1,500 feet to the Kirkstone Pass. The event includes trail and fell runs, open water swims and bush craft walks, and the main events include: The Great Langdale Trail Run at 10am on Saturday, the Ambleside Fell Run and Open Water Swim at Waterhead on Sunday. 4.Broughton Beer Festival - October 1st-3rd. If you enjoy a pint or two, this is a great place to visit. A fine selection of real ales and brews from all over the region are featured, plus entertainment and delicious local food. For more information call: 01229 716238.
5.Ambleside Marafun - October 10th. The Ambleside Marafun is an event for teams of 5 runners, and gives people the opportunity to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and the Westmorland General Hospital Cancer Unit Appeal. Every team member runs just 5.2 miles through magnificent scenery, and teams can be male, female or mixed. To apply or for more information, check out: www.amblesidemarafun.org.uk
6.Buttermere Shepherds Meet and Show - October 16th. Featuring sheep and dog shows, traditional crafts, fell racing, Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling and, the Beer Tent, this show provides the perfect day out for lovers of the great outdoors. 7.Lakes Motor Cycle Trials - October 16th-17th - Broughton-in-Furness. Whether you are a keen motorcyclist or you enjoy the thrills and spills of the sport from the sidelines, take a trip down to the trials at Broughton. For more information call:01229 716806.
8. Carlisle Fireshow - November 6th. Start: 7.00 pm - Finish approx 7.45 pm.Bitts Park, Carlisle. Free Admission - donations collected for local charities Themed bonfire and spectacular firework display set to music. Funfair and catering on site. For more information contact: 01228 817359.
9.Ambleside Lantern Procession and Christmas Lights Switch On - November 20th. For more information call: 015394 31516.
10.Santa Steam Bus Adventure - December 12th, 18th and 19th, 2010 - Broughton in Furness. Each child receives a gift from Santa during this 1.5 hour trip. For more information call: 01229 716115.
